Guyer Opera House Investigation

Society of the Supernatural was recently at the Guyer Opera House in Lewisville, Indiana. Erected in 1901 by O.K. Guyer, the building has seen its share of history with many wild west acts and theatrical performances. It was also a hotspot during prohibition and had some use as a funeral home with an embalming room in the basement and space for bodied to be stored.

Tragically, during a firearms demonstration in the 1920s, a young boy sitting in the audience was struck by a bullet and killed. Many believe that his spirit, or at least the residual energy of the tragedy, still lingers.

Check out part of our investigation below:

Pennsylvania Dogman Map

It's amazing how many Dogman reports continue to come in from around the country. I'm receiving accounts on a regular basis, many of them from people who are speaking out about sightings they've had in the past, but many others, recounting incidents right after they've happened.

I've heard a few researchers refer to Dogman as a "new thing" but really, these sightings have historical precedence. Early settlers talked about "werewolf" encounters here in the United States, werewolf clearly being a term they brought over from Europe. Did they also bring these creatures with them, or were they encountering something unknown that was already living here in the wilds?

For those interested in Dogmen accounts, Lon Strickler at Phantoms and Monsters has put up an online map listing sightings, both modern and historical, for the Pennsylvania region.

This is a great tool and I'm sure that it will be expanded on. If other researchers did the same in their areas, we could cover a lot of ground and perhaps start looking at patterns.

Check the map out at this link:

Monstro Bizzaro Reviewed

Cryptozoologist Lyle Blackburn writes a regular column for popular horror magazine Rue Morgue. It's a brief highlight of cryptid themed weirdness for each issue and due to space constraints, it's far to short.

Thankfully, the magazine has started publishing special "library" editions that focus on a singular topic within the scope of the areas they cover, horror in culture and entertainment in all its aspects.

The latest addition to the Rue Morgue Library is titled "Monstro Bizarro" the name of Blackburn's regular column in the magazine, and, as you may have guessed, the focus of the edition is cryptids.

The book kicks off with a Foreword by filmmaker Eduardo Sanchez who brought us the Bigfoot movie "Exists." The emphasis on the volume is the presence of cryptids in movies, television, comics and other media. Subtitled "An Essential Manual of Mysterious Monsters," the book comes in at 130 pages and covers a wide range of topics. In fact, it's amazing how much is packed into this book. Cryptid toys, articles on cryptid related museums, tons of monster movie info and much more. Did you know there was "Bigfoot Metal" music?

There's tons of graphics in the book too including some great art by "Eerie" Eric Fargiorgio and plenty of classic cryptid themed movie posters.

I'm proud to say that I was also a part of this project. When Rue Morgue approved the idea, Lyle called on me, Ken Gerhard and Nick Redfern. He wanted a few other cryptozoologist along for the ride and we were all happy to contribute to this cool publication.

It resulted in a great blend of cryptid entertainment and information on the real world of cryptozoology. For instance, peppered throughout the book are "case files." Each case file presents a weird but true cryptid encounter direct from one of our files.

There's "Shadows in the Forest A History of Bigfoot Research" by Ken, plenty of info on the Fouke Monster, one of Lyle's specialties and a piece by Nick blending info on the Mothman and films that utilize the flying cryptid. My own feature article is "Death Worms, From Tremors to Legends" about one of my favorite cryptids, the Mongolian Death Worm.

I'm looking forward to working on more projects with these guys, they're all amazing researchers and investigators that I'm proud to call friends.

Grab this book while you can, it's selling out quickly. Find it at your local Barnes & Noble (it's usually on the newsstand where you find Rue Morgue magazine), or order direct from Rue Morgue's website here:

Max Spiers: The Final Interview

Last week, I posted a story on the strange death of UFOlogist Max Spiers. If you missed it, that story can be found here:

http://twocrowsparanormal.blogspot.com/2016/10/strange-death-of-ufologist-max-spiers.html

I received a lot of questions and comments on the article and UFOlogy is still buzzing with the stranger aspects of the story of Max's death.

In a recent interview with BBC's Radio Four PM, UK UFOlogist Miles Johnson told reporters:

"Spiers knew he was going to die after working to expose enemies within other realities. We have now got an unthinkable situation. Max has died for his country and the people on this planet. We're dealing with aliens. We're dealing with a predator within humanity, a fifth column, which has been successful so far in causing us a great deal of damage and harm.

People like Max were involved in exposing that fifth column. He knew he was going to die. He knew he was in a trap. He told his mother that."

Friends of Spiers from Canterbury, Kent have reported that Max vomited a black liquid before he died. They have joined Spiers' mother in calling for an official inquiry into his mysterious death.

Paranoia magazine has posted the last interview with Max on their site, check it out for a glimpse into what Max was doing and what may have put him on the radar of those who want to silence people who dig into the UFO phenomena and conspiracies:

SOS at Haunted Sweet Springs

Sweet Springs in West Virginia was used for many different things during its time.  From a resort for those wanting to partake in the nearby healing waters, to a rest home, activity was constant on the site from 1760 until the 1980's when the building was closed down to the public.

Society of the Supernatural recently spent some time at the location, the first team to investigate the site, and we had some wild experiences.

New owners recently verified that Thomas Jefferson himself designed the place and the main building contains a "Jefferson mirror" and a "Jefferson fireplace and front entryway."

Check out some of night two of our time at this historic site:

SOS Haunting of Sweet Springs

Society of the Supernatural was honored to be the first team to investigate the historic Sweet Springs location in West Virginia.

The first buildings on the site date back to 1760 and originally, thousands of acres were part of the land, deeded to Lewis by England's King George.

Here's some footage from the first night of our investigation on the site.  The location was abandoned and closed up for many years but recent renovations may have stirred up activity.  It was a wild ride from the start! Check out night one below:

Hostage to the Devil

Malachi Martin was born in Ireland in 1921. He was ordained a Catholic priest and over the course of his long career, he became a well known writer, theologian and exorcist. He left Ireland and moved to New York City in 1964 and later became and American citizen.

One of his most significant books was the 1976 release "Hostage to the Devil," which dealt with demonic possession and exorcisms. Martin was involved with numerous paranormal cases and worked closely with John Zaffis and others in the field when they needed a priest trained in the Catholic rites of exorcism.

Martin died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1999. Some say there were strange circumstances around his death. He is buried in New York.

People continue to discover his work and over the past five years, director Martin Stalker has been hard at work on a production titled "Hostage to the Devil," after Malachi's famous book. Information from press releases include these details:

"...a film which examines age-old questions about the existence of the Devil and the debate over good verses evil, all through the life of a controversial, Irish-born Jesuit priest, Fr. Malachi Martin.

Using first person-interviews with paranormal royalty such as Lorraine Warren, Ralph Sarchie and John Zaffis, along with dramatic reconstructions, archival evidence, and words straight from Martin, this spine-chilling documentary takes the audience on a journey through an extraordinary life marked by battles against the Vatican, scandal, contention, and most of all, a deep and all-encompassing belief in the theory and practice of exorcism.

The film explains in graphic detail the process and outcomes of such an ordeal, including the horrifying case study of a four year old girl whom Fr. Martin assessed as requiring an exorcism. This was to be the last case he was involved in before he died under mysterious circumstances."

The director, Stalker, gave us a brief insight on his approach to the film in the following comments:

"I initially had feelings of disbelief that nothing had been made about this incredible and mysterious man before. This was what influenced my decision to get involved and to tell his story. I feel the film industry has been saturated with misconceptions on exorcism and diabolical possession. So it was important that this documentary addressed the realism of this subject matter through the knowledge of one man, through the personal experiences of others, and through using science and the Catholic Church as critical and theological anchors in the film."

Check out a trailer for the film here:

Patty Footage 49 Years Ago

October 20, 1967, forty-nine years ago today, two men became legends in the field of cryptozoology when they captured footage of a hairy creature in the woods of northern California.

Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin were on the search for Bigfoot near bluff creek in Humboldt County when they filmed the 16mm footage. The female creature they caught on camera has since become fondly known as "Patty."

Countless books, shows and documentaries have been produced that deal with the film and the events that surround it. It's considered one of the most intriguing pieces of footage and is still a hotly debated clip.

Patterson passed away in 1972, but Gimlin is still alive and well and is a frequent guest at Bigfoot conferences around the country.  So today, let's tip our hats to the two cowboys who gave us such a fascinating piece of the Sasquatch puzzle!

For a clip of the footage, commonly known as the PG Film, that includes analysis by make-up and effects artist Bill Munns, see below:

Canadian Dogman Encounter

Is there a dogman roaming remote areas of Nova Scotia?

Researcher Albert S Rosales recently posted an interesting report listed as a "Nova Scotia Werewolf" sighting.  The account is from a man named Robert MacLean and occurred in the spring of 2015. The report follows:

Location: Glengarry, Nova Scotia, Canada
Date: March 9, 2015

"Robert MacLean was driving home from a party in town in the morning when a deer ran across the road about 50 yards in front of him.
"It zipped across the road from the left to the right down over a steep embankment, moving as fast as anything I have ever seen."
Stated Robert.  He later added:
"A second later, a big animal chased after the deer, but just before tumbling into the crevasse, it stood on its back legs and stared into the headlights, its eyes glowing, and then was gone."

This wasn't the only evidence that was found. A local farmer, name withheld, found a dead cow in the field behind his barn, completely eviscerated with huge chunks of meat missing, and large bloody tracks leading off into the woods. It's important to note that Glengarry does not have a large population, mostly scattered houses surrounded by woods. It is an area where only a few people hunt, as hunters constantly complain about a feeling of 'being watched.' A survey of the area around the possible sighting site turned up a few deer tracks and a reddish smear just off the road, down over the bank, but a sample could not be taken due to the steep nature of the area."

Nova Scotia is on the eastern coast of Canada. It's almost completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The province was originally home to the Mi'kmaq people and the first European settlement was established by French colonist in 1605. Other Europeans followed and of course brought their traditions with them. This may be why there have been some legends of werewolf sightings in the region.

Although the above sighting was brief, combined with other odd factors in the region, it bears more investigation. There have also been a number of Bigfoot sightings in the area so some kind of unusual creature appears to be hiding out in the wild areas of Nova Scotia.

Ghost of Lawrence of Arabia

Does the ghost of the legendary Lawrence of Arabia still linger at his old retreat?

Clouds Hill in the Dorset countryside in the UK is a National Trust property.  It's a four room, hillside cottage once used by T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, as a retreat from the public spotlight.  The cottage has long been reputed to be a location of ghostly sightings, possibly of Lawrence himself who died in a motorcycle accident close to the property in 1935.

On July 31st of this year, a man spotted what he now believes was the ghost of Lawrence.  Exploring the site with a couple of friends, the man found himself bored with the small cottage and decided to walk out onto the property and up into the surrounding hills.  On a slope over the site the man looked out over the country towards nearby Bovington Camp where Lawrence had once been stationed.  Suddenly, the man noticed "What appeared to be a human figure in a black robe suddenly stepping out from behind a small sapling."

The witness said the figure's face was concealed by a large hood or covering of some kind.  When one of the man's companions called out to him, he turned for a moment and when he looked back seconds later, the apparition had vanished.

Not being from the UK, the man was unfamiliar with the stories of Lawrence's ghost haunting the site, but when he was later shown photos of the famous figure in Bedouin robes, he confirmed that the profile and outline were the same as what he had witnessed.

Strange Death of UFOlogist Max Spiers

"Your boy's in trouble.  If anything happens to me, investigate."

So stated UFOlogist and conspiracy theorist Max Spiers in a text to his mother just days before his strange death in Poland.

Spiers was found dead on a sofa in the apartment of a woman he had only known for a short time.  Officials have ruled that his death was due to "natural causes," but no post-mortem exam was done on the body by Polish authorities.

Spiers' mother, Vanessa Bates, stated that her son had been making a name for himself delving into various government cover-ups.  She says that because of his investigations, he had made some enemies and there were people who were out to get him:

"...I think Max had been digging in some dark places and I fear that somebody wanted him dead."

Spiers' recent work involved digging into the backgrounds of some well known figures in politics, business and entertainment.  His sudden passing has led many other researchers to believe that his death was orchestrated by covert agents out to put a stop to his probes.

At the time of his death, Spiers was only thirty-nine years old.  His mother said her son was not ill and had no physical problems:

"Max was a very fit man who was in good health, and yet, he apparently just died suddenly on a sofa.  All I have is a death certificate from the Polish authorities that it was from natural causes, but no post-mortem was done so how can they tell that?
They are also refusing to release any paperwork about it to me because, absurdly, I don't have his written permission."

Spiers' mother was able to get his remains flown home a week after his death.  She had him buried in his home town of Canterbury.

She was also able to arrange a post-mortem exam by a pathologist in Kent, but more than two months after Max's death, she has still not been given the results.  She believes that her son was poisoned and that there is a reason that the toxicology screens from the post-mortem have not been released. Officials at the North East Kent coroner's office would not confirm anything about the investigation stating only that they were still in the "very early stages" of the inquiry.

Bates told reporters:

"He [Max] has a brother, Josh, and sister, Becky, who are both devastated, as are his two boys.  We all want answers to this and I will continue to fight to get to the truth."

There have been numerous, strange deaths in the field of UFOlogy and conspiracy theorists believe there is an ongoing plot to eliminate researchers who get to close to certain matters or figures in the shadowy world of government programs and UFO secrets.

New Room Discovered in the Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California is an iconic home well known in the world of the supernatural.

Known widely as the "Winchester Mystery House, the home was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester firearm fortunes.  The house is now a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Construction on the home began in 1884 and continued until Sarah's death in 1922.  Winchester believed herself to be plagued by the spirits of those killed by her family's firearms and that the only way to appease the spirits, or at least silence them, was to have continuous construction in the home.
The result is a confusing maze of doors and windows, stairs that lead to nowhere and rooms that don't make sense.  Some believe that the endless maze confuses the spirits and leads them to wander around within the building.

The site has long been considered a haunted location and accounts include mischievous spirits and the ghosts of former workers.

Now, those who currently run the historic site have announced that a new room has been discovered in the mansion.
Reportedly, the space is an attic room that was boarded up by Sarah Winchester in 1906 following an earthquake.  Winchester believed there were supernatural causes behind the quake but it's unclear why she would have sealed the particular room off.

The room was essentially a time capsule containing a sewing machine and dress form along with a number of other items used by Sarah during her time in the home.  The items are now part of a special exhibit titled "Sarah's Attic."

Cryptozoology Today App

Apps have certainly come a long way in the last few years.  In the beginning they were often clunky
and difficult to navigate, not to mention the endless technical problems that many of them had.
But as with all technology, things have vastly improved and become more stylish and user friendly.

A while back, I was contacted by the developers of a new cryptozoology app asking if they could include my blog on their listings.  I was happy to oblige, especially after seeing the work they were doing to make their app a quality product.

"Cryptozoology Today" is now available for both the iphone and android systems.  The app has a great appearance and is updated on a regular basis.

Features include a news feed with all the latest crypto related stories from a wide variety of sources, a blog list, wiki and a cool sightings map that covers the world.  Obviously, it's an ever developing site so checking with it on a regular basis will provide you with lots of new information.

My one suggestion would be to perhaps add an events listing for conferences, symposiums and other notable gatherings of interest to those pursuing strange creatures.

I'm please to be a part of the site and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow.  This is a great resource for anyone interested in the field of cryptozoology and I urge you to download it today!

Now, if someone would just do something similar with ghosts.....

Check itunes or the google play store for "Cryptozoology Today" and you'll easily find the app.

Demon Haunted Reviewed

"Mirror Head sat glittering and brooding in the window of a second hand antiques and odd finds shop, waiting for a new owner.  Or victim.  It was one and the same.

Mirror Head was made of a severed mannequin's bald head, and took its name from its skin of mirror shards.  Dozens of sharp irregular pieces of mirror were glued in a mosaic over the front of its head."

Thus begins the story of "Mirror Head," the opening tale in the new book Demon Haunted.  As we quickly learn, Mirror Head turns out to be quite haunted and leads to a series of problems for the unlucky couple that takes the object home.  Fortunately for them, they eventually found the Haunted Collector himself, John Zaffis.

John recently sent me a copy of his new book, co-written with Rosemary Ellen Guiley and it's certainly an enjoyable read.

The creepy story of Mirror Head is a great start and many more strange tales follow.  Zaffis has become known for both his museum of haunted objects, and his willingness to haul away cursed items that unlucky people don't know how to deal with.  His years in the field and the countless items he's gathered have come with some incredible stories and in Demon Haunted, he shares a number of them.

Spirits and entities can attach to the most exotic of objects, or the most common of items.  In Demon Haunted we learn about some of the more interesting stories connected to items that John has retrieved.  There's the walking stick that drains energy, strange containers connected to magical practices, demons and djinn, and even a number of religious statues and items, which, yes, can indeed become cursed or filled with negative energy.

As if sharing such stories wasn't enough, Zaffis has included a very personal chapter to end the book.  Titled "Messages from Ed Warren," the chapter details communications from the spirit world to John and others, that have seemingly come from his uncle, Ed Warren.

Ed Warren is an iconic figure in the world of paranormal investigation, being at the forefront of numerous cases during his career.  He passed away in 2006 at age seventy-nine.  John himself suffered a heart attack in the spring of 2015.  It was after this brush with death, that messages from Ed began to come.  The early communications came via a medium in Georgia who passed the information along to John.  But Ed has been persistent.  His voice has come across ITC devices commonly known as "ghost boxes" or "spirit boxes," in an ever widening circle.

I have my own personal connection to these incidents.  In late spring of 2015, I began to receive communication from an "Ed" on various ghost boxes at multiple locations.  The messages were constant and pressing and I was consistently told that it was Ed Warren speaking.

I'd met the Warrens in the late 1970s during the early days of my interest in all things supernatural.  Not living in the northeast, I was unable to spend extensive time with them, but as early "paranormal celebrities" they were certainly an influence on anyone with an interest in the field in those days.

When messages from Ed started coming to me during investigations, I had no idea what had unfolded with John.  It was only later, during a conversation with Rosemary that I mentioned the series of strange communications and learned about the extent of Ed's communications.  Oddly, during an ITC session at the Mystic Inn in CT, a group of people that included John received messages from Ed where the name David was mentioned.  Was a further connection being made?

The mystery of the messages from Ed is still unfolding, leaving us all to wonder what exactly is so important that he comes through to multiple people in the field.  Hopefully, as more information is gathered, we will all understand what is so important.  In the meantime, John and the rest of us continue to listen.

As for Demon Haunted, Zaffis and Guiley have given us an excellent read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Pick it up on Amazon for a compelling series of stories from John's long career.

Denver Airport Celebrates Conspiracies

Secret societies, hidden alien bases, government plans to reduce the world population or survive in underground bases.  Through the years, all of these ideas and more have been linked to the Denver International Airport in Denver, Colorado.

Opened in 1995, the airport has long been discussed among conspiracy theorists as a central location connected to the infamous NWO, or "New World Order."

The belief has been driven in large part by the series of strange and disturbing paintings that can be found in the airport.  Conspiracy writers and researchers have long believed that the paintings depict various plans in motion by the NWO.

For years, airport officials have professed that the paintings are merely artistic displays and have nothing to do with secret societies or conspiracies.

But now, Denver Airport CEO Kim Day has announced that, during the month of October, the airport will stop denying the conspiracies and embrace them instead:

“Whether it’s because of our impressive size, expansive infrastructure or robust public art program, Denver International Airport has long heard the rumors, innuendo and internet chatter about being the center of conspiracies – from the absurd to the entertaining, Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura even asserted in his 2010 show Conspiracy Theory that, ‘There’s a lot of strange things about this airport.’ So, we are dedicating the month of October to embracing that strangeness and sharing in the fun. Because, after all, we couldn’t really hide all of these happenings from the millions of people who visit this airport each year.”

Events include a tour of the airport's conspiracy related art, an exhibit titled "Conspiracies Theories Uncovered," and a contest called "What's under the Den?" with the grand prize being a tour of the airport's famous underground facilities.

SOS Ghosts of the Hawks Nest Tragedy

Back in the summer, the Society of the Supernatural spent some time in West Virginia.  While there, we investigated the site of the Hawk's Nest Tragedy.

While digging tunnels in the 1930's, an untold number of mostly black, migrant workers contracted acute silicosis and died.  The deaths were covered up and the bodies of the workers were place in unmarked graves without a proper burial.  Family members were never notified of the deaths and had no idea what had happened to their loved ones.  It wasn't until congressional hearings in the 1970's that the the bodies were uncovered and given a proper burial along with a memorial.
